A man close to our hotel had motorbikes for rent, on the road we discovered he had left about a thimble-full of fuel in the tanks. Neither bike had a working fuel gauge so the scooter ran dry on the way back. Jake's motorcycle made it to a gas-station and he was able to bring a liter of fuel back to where the scooter had petered out. The fuel-incident just added a little extra flavor to a great day and, of course, India is all about full flavor. (more about the day below)
Our last stop took us to the Church of St. Augustine ruins. Just a quick jaunt from the bustling crowds of the Basilica lay a peaceful monument to the brief and glorious reign of Portugal at the height of her maritime power. The church was almost completely empty and we were free to roam its grounds at our own pace. Taking in the immensity of the structure left us in awe and we wondered how marvelous the grounds must have been in their prime. The ruins completed our sight-seeing adventure and sent us on our way enriched by having experienced a piece of history when Europeans killed and conquered in the pursuit of spice.
